Genomic Selection in Nelore Cattle in Brazil
نویسنده
چکیده
Despite a favorable business model, genomic selection is still not a popular tool for genetic improvement of Nelore cattle in Brazil mainly due to the lack of a costeffective strategy for its application. Different independent Nelore breeding programs have already developed prediction equations for usual and difficult/expensive to measure traits. Unfortunately, some programs are using genomic predictions more as a marketing than a selection tool. Different breeding schemes were compared aiming to envisage opportunities to better apply genomic selection in Nelore cattle. Breeding schemes combining genomic selection and reproductive technologies provided the best results in terms of genetic gain. Benefit of using genomic selection in the Nelore breed is also expected to occur in commercial herds, allowing them to buy young replacement bulls with more reliable proofs for a comprehensive number of economically relevant traits.

Genome-Enabled Prediction of Breeding Values for Feedlot Average Daily Weight Gain in Nelore Cattle
Nelore is the most economically important cattle breed in Brazil, and the use of genetically improved animals has contributed to increased beef production efficiency. The Brazilian beef feedlot industry has grown considerably in the last decade, so the selection of animals with higher growth rates on feedlot has become quite important. Genomic selection (GS) could be used to reduce generation i...

Summary Age at first calving (AFC) measures the entry of heifers into the beef cattle production system. This trait can be used as a selection criterion for earlier reproductive performance. Using data from Nelore cattle participating in the 'Program for Genetic Improvement of the Nelore Breed' (PMGRN-Nelore Brazil), bi-trait analyses were performed using the restricted maximum likelihood metho...
متن کاملGenome scan for meat quality traits in Nelore beef cattle.
Meat quality traits are economically important because they affect consumers' acceptance, which, in turn, influences the demand for beef. However, selection to improve meat quality is limited by the small numbers of animals on which meat tenderness can be evaluated due to the cost of performing shear force analysis and the resultant damage to the carcass. Genome wide-association studies for War...
متن کاملGenome-Wide Detection of CNVs and Their Association with Meat Tenderness in Nelore Cattle
Brazil is one of the largest beef producers and exporters in the world with the Nelore breed representing the vast majority of Brazilian cattle (Bos taurus indicus). Despite the great adaptability of the Nelore breed to tropical climate, meat tenderness (MT) remains to be improved. Several factors including genetic composition can influence MT. In this article, we report a genome-wide analysis ...

This study was conducted to examine the relationship among average annual productivity of the cow (PRODAM), yearling weight (YW), postweaning BW gain (PWG), scrotal circumference (SC), and stayability in the herd for at least 6 yr (STAY) of Nelore and composite beef cattle. Measurements were taken on animals born between 1980 and 2010 on 70 farms located in 7 Brazilian states. Estimates of heri...
